Women outnumber men in the United States. Only slightly…but enough that we should all sit up and pay attention. To what they do, think and say. Here are a few pieces of data that men…and women…might find interesting, even surprising… but definitely worth knowing.

 

YOUR NEW RESUME BOOSTER: 82% of women in executive-level jobs had played organized sports in middle, high or post-secondary school. Moreover, nearly half of women earning over $75,000 identified themselves as “athletic.” (Source: Forbes) Tweet this Newz!

YOUR BREAST BET: Exercising three or more hours per week could reduce your risk for breast cancer by up to 20-30%. (Source: Women’s Health) Tweet this Newz!

OWN THE BIZ: The number of economic contributions of women-owned firms continues to grow. The rate of growth in the number of women-owned enterprises over the past 16 years remains higher than the national average. GOT A CASE OF THE MONDAYS? In a recent survey, 46% of women said that they feel least attractive on Mondays. Possibly the result of Saturday over-indulgence, Sunday came in second with 39%. (Source: Media Post) Tweet this Newz!

AGE AIN’T NOTHIN’ BUT A NUMBER: Diana Nyad, the woman who just swam 103 miles from Cuba and Florida, says that it’s never too late to complete your goals. For almost two years, Nyad completed daily 6 to 12 hour swims. “I am a better athlete today than I was at 29,” says Nyad. (SOURCE: CNN) Tweet this Newz!

CLIMBING UP THE LADDER: A survey of 60 major corporations show 325,000 women had entry-level positions, 150,000 made it to middle managements and 7,000 made it to VP, SVP or CEO.  On average, they made up 27% of VPs, 24% of SVPs and 19% of C-suite execs. (Source: McKinsey) Tweet this Newz!

HOUSE FOR 1, PLEASE: Single females take over the second greatest share in the housing market, second only to married couples. Their share is even twice that of single men. (Source: NPR) Tweet this Newz!

WORKPLACE WOES: Men get more of the critical assignments that lead to advancement than women do. On average, the men’s project budgets were 2x as big with 3x as many staffers as the women’s 22% of the women were given a budget in excess of $10M as compared to 30% of the men. FROM THE FEMALE PERSPECTIVE: When asked to name the time of day when they feel they look their worst, 69% of respondents identified the hours between 5-7 a.m. and 7-9 a.m. Late night takes its toll too on the feeling-pretty scale, with 54% saying they believe they’re least attractive after 10 p.m. Women have the strongest positive feelings about their appearance in a relatively short window between noon and 3 pm. WHERE’S THE DIFFERENCE: This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Equal Pay Act, which was a law signed by John F. Kennedy and intended to ensure pay parity for women. Unfortunately, five decades later, women still earn an average of 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man. For African-American and Hispanic women it’s even lower: 64 and 54 cents, respectively.
